JS Buckie was formed in easter 2007 and started off with 4 members. By the end of 2008, this had grown to over 100 and the group has become an established part of the ‘Buckie scene’. Members subscribe from all over the Buckie catchment area and come in all shapes, sizes, age, gender and ability. Click here to read our guidelines

There was a great turnout from JS Buckie members who took part in various stages of Coasting Around Britain, a unique baton-carrying venture around the whole British mainland. Thanks and well done to all those who participated.

June 2010

malcolm1.jpgCongratulations to Malcolm Stickle (left), who was nominated 'Top Improver' during JS Buckie's Block 2 programme. Malcolm only joined this year, but has made rapid progress. New girls Fiona Lawrence and Maggie Finlay from Cullen both received Outstanding Commitment awards.

team_buckie.jpg

Well done to 'Team Buckie' for their successful debuts at the Ythan Challenge. May 2010

The intrepid Jog Scotland Buckie participants at the end of their successful debuts in the 2010 Ythan Challenge (Sun 27th June). Left to right : Eileen Riddoch, Buckie (1.35.29); Michelle Stewart, Cullen (1.23.38); Clare Lock (1.30.15) and husband Steve, Portknockie (1.21.16); Gillian Hay, Findochty (1.27.50); Morag Mair, Findochty (1.35.29); and Elaine Brown, Lintmill (1.07.49). The 11k cross country event through the Esslemont Estate in Ellon involved negotiating metal gates, climbing nets, bales of straw, ladder embankments, fallen tree trunks, and crossing the 'Eternal Bog of Stink'. Hard to believe that they all plan to go back and do it again next year!

Another amazing performance from Wendy Christie at the Benromach 10k saw her reducing last year's time by near 5 minutes to clock yet another personal best (46.38) despite the very windy conditions. Elaine Brown (47.19) also squeezed in a PB and picked up a prize as 3rd Vet runner. Congratulations also go out to Christopher Wood (56.32) and Wendy Edwards (63.08) for successfully completing their debuts in 10k race. Supporting them were Judith Coull (48.59) who took 3 minutes off last year's time;  Lesley McKay who also ran a fantastic PB (49.04); and vintage performers Wenzell Dunnett (56.49) and Bill Cooke (69.55) added another 10k medal to their growing collections.

All happy to be stretching out at the end of a warm session

April 2010

"We are writing to say thanks for letting us join the adult JS group for one night [27 April].We look forward to joining when we are old enough, some of us only have 1 year to go including me! We liked joining our jog leaders, parents, family, and everyone else. It was great to join the warm-up as our warm-up is totally different, it was funny seeing Bill doing (well trying) to do the exercises! We can't wait till we join the adult Jog Scotland, but until then we hope to see you again soon, to join in on all the fun and games. (p.s. the juniors WERE the best [at doing the exercises]).  Georgia Cowie, on behalf of JS Buckie Juniors

junior_park_night.jpg

More than 70 folk turned out in the rain for JS Buckie's first combined adult and junior session.

Our Block 2 has got off to a good start, with new members and returners swelling our numbers again. Last week's nice weather brought out 80+ walkers, joggers and runners, so we could be busy this summer!

Our second Block programme of the year commences on Tues 6th April at 6.30pm, meeting at the Buckie Swimming Pool Car Park, and again at The Drifter car park on Thurs 8th April at 6.45pm.

Joyce Murray, centre, with her Block 1 'Top Improver' Certicate, flanked by 'Outstanding Commitment' recipients, Lisa Main and Anne Fiske, all from Buckie. Since taking up regular exercise, the ladies have collectively lost six and a half stone.

Some stunning results again in the Elgin 10k this year.  Wendy Christie, Lisa Main and Anne Fiske continued their remarkably long journey of continual improvement, whilst Lynnie Farquhar - greatly aided by the encouragement of Linda Lamont and Bill Cooke - completed her first 10k. Others taking part included Elaine Brown; Scott Reid; George Smith; Tina Cameron; George McIntosh; Adeline Mitchell; Michelle Cowie; Michelle Slater; Ruth Keddie-Smith; and Wenzell Dunnett.

We're aware from our membership that quite a few people are interested in jogging their way to improved health and fitness, but have not yet had the motivation or courage to give it a go. We're therefore putting on an Introductory Talk Night for Beginners, so that novices can come along and find out about us in a non-exercise setting. This event is taking place at 7pm on Tues 23rd March in Group Room 2 at the Buckie Community High School. (Contact our Group Leader Nick Brown 01542 842847 if you require more information).

We had a great turnout for our Sports Relief night, with around 60 adults and 20 juniors joining in. Everyone succeeded in either walking, jogging or running along the coastal mile (and back) and we raised  £300, so a great effort all round. It was nice to see some new (and 'old') faces taking part and rising to the challenge.

sports_relief.jpg

Some of the group who ran a mile for Sports Relief

Although races and long distance running is not the primary purpose of JS Buckie, we cannot but fail to be impressed at the efforts of Tina Cameron and Heather Goodall, with the support of Elaine Brown, to successfully complete their debuts at the Inverness Half Marathon. This involved training all through winter and their time of 2hrs 31 secs was more than well earned. Congratulations ladies.

inverness_half.jpg

Are you interested in the national effort for Sports Relief but don't know where to take part? Look no further than Buckie on the evening of Tuesday 16th March when we will lead the way from The Drifter along to Strathlene beach. Our local group is making a contribution to the 2010 Sainsburys Sports Relief Mile, which sees the whole of the UK coming together to be active, raise cash, and change lives. All the money raised is spent helping transform the lives of poor and vulnerable people both at home and across the world's poorer countries. The event will start next to the RNLI station at 7pm and participants will be asked to make voluntary monetary contributions to Sport Relief at the point of registration in the Drifter car park. Although there are no road crossings involved, we will be walking, jogging, and running on pavement surfaces under streetlight, so do come suitably dressed to be safe and be seen. The end point is the car park next to the Aurora Restaurant. Some people will be happy to jog back to the Drifter again. Others may want to share a lift back and, if you let us know in advance, we will try to facilitate this for you. (For further information about other Sport Relief activities in the UK, see www.sportrelief.com ).

Pats on the back go to Riz McGuile and Wenzell Dunnett who, together with Nick and Elaine Brown, flew the flag for JS Buckie at the Nairn 10k.

Feb 2010

Well done to Jog Leader Elaine Brown for a fab 1.49 half marathon debut in Barcelona.

Jan 2010

At last we get going again!  Well done to all those 75 folk who came out in the cold and dark for the first session of the year on 19th Jan. We look forward to seeing you in future weeks when , hopefully, the weather will be much improved and there will be no need to cancel again.

Snow, snow, and more snow! What a frustrating start to the year, resulting in our Block 1 Programme (see below) being postponed for the foreseeable future. Assuming that the snow will still be with us on the12th, the predicted start is now Tues 19th Jan 10.

We kick off our Block 1 Programme at 6.30pm on Tues 5th Jan 10 meeting near the entrance to the Swimming Pool in central Buckie. This is the ideal time for beginners or returners to come along and you'd be more than welcome to join in. We have a wide range of abilities, so you are almost certain to fit in somewhere. Don't put it off any longer - get those trainers on and feel that fresh air!

Congratulations to those hardy souls who turned out on New Year's Day for the Buckie Sair Heidie 7k. This includes Wendy Christie who kicked off the year where she left off and was first lady home.

Last year's News

Dec 2009

Wendy Christie, was crowned 'Top Performer of 2009' at this year's Annual Awards Ceremony on account of her 'year-round devotion, her encouragement of friends and family members to exercise, and her own remarkable personal improvement over the past year'. The other annual awards to given out for 'Outstanding Commitment throughout 2009' went to Janice Simpson from Buckie and Gillian Hay from Findochty.  Recognition awards were also dished for performances in the group's 2009 Block 4 Winter programme.

 wendy.jpg

steve.jpg

Grabbing the limelight as 'Top Improver' was Steve Lock from Portknockie who moved up two ability groups during the programme.  An 'Outstanding Commitment' award was granted to Bill Cooke. 'Perfect Attendance' certificates were awarded to Karen Brockie, Anne Fiske, and Rebecca Taylor all from Buckie, whilst '2-year service' awards went to Angela Cowie from Portknockie and Lara Sutherland, Tina Cameron, and Eileen Riddoch from Buckie.

Huge congratulations to Ruth Keddie-Smith for her successful completion of the Lossiemouth Turkey Trot. Having completed a couple of 10ks this year, Ruth opted to test herself with a step up to 10 miles distance and excelled herself with a time of 1hr 30mins - all the more remarkable given that Ruth did most of her training by herself. Wenzell Dunnett meanwhile came not far behind Ruth in just under 1hr 33.

Ruth Keddie-Smith is delighted to cross the finish at the 'Turkey Trot' at Lossiemouth.

Another large contingent from our group took part in this year's Moray 5k Winter Challenge at Fochabers and there was plenty 'Jog Scotland Buckie' T-shirts on show. Congratulations go out to all who participated, especially Scott Reid and Wendy Christie who were the first JS Moray members across the line, as well as Shona Murray who was going the distance in such an event for the first time. Several members of the group also managed personal bests - quite an achievement given the time of year and the terrain involved!

Jog Leader Gillian Hay and the ever-improving Clare Lock enjoy the finish of the Moray Winter 5k.

Nov 2009

Congratulations to Hazel Lyons and Bill Cooke for successfully completing their Jog Leader training course. Hazel and Bill will now act as 'apprentice' leaders and go to become fully fledged leaders in the New Year. Wendy Christie, who will be assisting the Coasters(see Buckie Juniors section), also completed the training course; as did Malcolm Mair who, with the benefit of many years of experience, leads for the Fochabers group as well as supporting Buckie.

Oct 2009

JS Buckie members again did themselves and their town proud with a magnificent turnout at the final road race of the season at the Inverness 10k. A group of 30 of us went through by bus and linked up with JS colleagues from Dufftown and Elgin along the way. The great majority did personal bests or personal firsts and the whole outing was a great success with a marvellous 'buzz' throughout the day. (For full race results, see the Loch Ness marathon website).

Sept 2009

muriel.jpg

Members all met for a BBQ at the home of Group Leaders Nick and Elaine Brown to mark the end of a successful Block programme and to celebrate the achievements of certain individuals. Receiving the honour of 'Top Improver' was Muriel Hamilton from Cullen (see photo). Outstanding Commitment awards went to Wendy Christie, Gillian Hay, and Jennifer Lawson, whilst Michelle Cowie, Adeline Mitchell, and Lisa Main were all recognised for their perfect attendance .

A number of members decided to use the Dyke 10k as a final piece of training and preparation for Inverness in October. Young Steven Cox continued his rise to stardom (see Keith and District AAC Information page) whilst Elaine Brown broke through a two-year 'plateau' and ran a personal best. (For full details, see the Forres Harriers website).

Breezy conditions at the third and final Moray 3k meant that most of the Buckie contingent had slower times than previously...except for Scott Reid who broke the 12 min barrier for the first time and Brodie Christie who was not far behind in 12.17.

The group did themselves and the town proud with their various contributions - e.g. organisation, administration, marshalling, participation, supporting and encouraging - at the 10th anniversary of the Buckie 10k. Click here for results

Some of the large contingent of participants in the Buckie 10k. Many of the group were going the distance for the first time - quite an achievement!

Some great performances at the Moray 10k, with personal bests for Scott Reid (44.22) and Wendy Christie (50.16) and outstanding efforts from our 'vintage' joggers Wenzell Dunnett (55.39) and Muriel Hamilton (80.09).

Nick Brown and Janice Simpson represented JS Buckie at a meal with Jog Scotland's chief officers Ann Davidson and Megan Hubbard ahead of the Moray 10k. Ann and Megan were visting Moray to see and hear about our progress at first hand, as well as experience the Moray festival of running on 13th Sept. Ann and Megan were delighted to see some JS Buckie T-shirts on display in Elgin and stated how impressed they were with the group's development. (For more information, go to the Home Page 'Latest News' section).

Aug 2009

Some very impressive runs by members in the recent Elgin 3k Series events, with most showing great improvement on their 2008 times. For example, Nick Brown 9.53 (10.01 in 2008); Rebecca Taylor, 11.42 (12.47); Martin Christie 12.08; Scott Reid, 12.09; Wendy Christie 13.20 (15.56); Lisa Main 14.04 (15.30); Andrea McIntosh 14.17; Diane Gilbertson 15.40 (15.45); Wenzell Dunnett 15.49 (16.00); Bill Cooke 16.50 (17.58); Joyce Murray 17.52.

The words 'BUCKIE Jog Scotland' are set to be seen in the streets of Vancouver thanks to a chance meeting between Buckie Jog Leaders and Canadian Mark Hyder. Mark's mother was a Buckie girl and he was over staying at her home during July and August. When he read about the JS Dufftown 5k on Sat 15th August, Mark, a keen runner with Lionsgate Roadrunners, decided to take part and was immediately struck by the number of Buckie T-shirts on display. When he approached the Group Leader to enquire about the T-shirts, he was invited to sit with the Buckie entrants at the end of the race. Mark then expressed a desire to take part in a JS Buckie session before he departed and, at that recent session, he was presented with a members' T-shirt. A grateful Mark said, "I'm so glad that I bumped into JS Buckie - what a friendly bunch! As well as enjoying their company, I loved the training session and will wear my new T-shirt with great pride". Mark has pledged to keep in contact with the group and provide the photographic evidence of the T-shirt being worn in Canada!

July 2009

Our new Block 3 starts on Tuesday 7th July meeting at the School Playing Field and also on Thursday 9th July meeting at the Drifter Car Park (see map and contact information on JS Buckie page to find out more).

Members met on sun-kissed beach at Cullen to celebrate the end of a block programme and also receive Recognition Awards. Jog Leader Richard Nye announced to great applause that the Top Improver was Michelle Cowie from Buckie. Richard stated that it had been easy to choose Michelle because she had shown real enthusiasm, a high level of devotion to training, had fully entered into the spirit of the group, had encouraged others to take part, and had accrued obvious personal health benefits.

A delighted Michelle said, " I am very proud to have received the award.Wow! I just cant stop speaking about JS Buckie to everyone because it is such a warm friendly group in which everyone is involved! I started in the walk group last October and steadily improved with the encouragement from the jog leaders and, of course, the other JSB members. I love coming along and being part of the whole group and noticing not only my own progression but others too! It has been a fun way to improve my fitness and health and to date I have reduced my BMI to 24 from 31 and lost over 3 stone, taking me down to a now healthy weight which I am naturally delighted about..so let's hear it for Jog Scotland Buckie".

Jog Scotland Buckie's latest 'Top Improver' Michelle Cowie from Buckie receives her award certificate from Jog Leader Richard Nye.

Meanwhile, awards for Outstanding Commitment were made to Janice Simpson and Heather Reid both from Buckie. Richard remarked that Janice has barely missed a single session in the past year, whilst Heather had demonstrated a great deal of determination and patience when working her way back from injury to high level fitness again.

Buckie High School pupil Kim Riddoch was the evening's only recipient of the Perfect Attendance award and her recent improvement is plain to see.

The final awards of the evening were granted to eight other members in recognition of their Two Year Service to the group. These were Jog Leaders Heather Goodall and Alison Vass, as well as Lisa Main, Louise Campbell, Gillian Rose, and Lara Sutherland from Buckie; Joyce Murray from Findochty; and Katie Maclean from Cullen.

June 2009

Well done to everyone who successfully took part in the Aberdeen Race for Life 5k, especially Judith Cowie who did it for the first time.

eden_and_gill.jpg

Everyone had a ball at this year's Sports Night. Wenzell and Sheila showed much creative talent with their various props, and Gillian Bailey's team demonstrated how difficult it is to run and laugh at the same time!

JS Buckie members were again out in support of the Moray 5k in Elgin on Sun 14th June. There were impressive running perfomances from our junior members Rebecca Taylor (20.33) and Kim Riddoch (25.21). There were also commendable runs from Lesley McKay (27.04) and Anne Fiske (33.20) who were both participating for the first time. (For full results see Jog Moray Events section).

JS Buckie was well represented at this year's Elgin Marafun. Our Jog Leaders showed the way with the Jog Scotties (Ricky Nye, Gillian Hay, Morag Mair, Heather Goodall, and Alison Vass) clearly demonstrating their 'lead by example' qualities, whilst other JSB leaders, Nick and Elaine Brown ran with Keith and District AAC teams (see K&D information page). Not to be outdone, the Buckie Quines (Wendy Christie, Andrea McIntosh, Lisa Main, Kim Riddoch and Rebecca Taylor) put in a fine performance that drew the attention of the 'man on the mic' on several occasions, whilst Lisa Wood and Ruth Keddie ran for work teams.

May 2009

Congratulations to Lorna Taylor and Arlene Duthie who took part in their debut 5k event by successfully completing the Inverness Race for Life.

Buckie participants were out in great force at the Forres 10k (9th May) for the third and final 10k race of the 'NS Series', thanks to a big contingent from the local Jog Scotland group, some of whom had run in Nairn and Elgin previously. Martin Christie was first back in the commendable time of 46.59, soon followed by George Smith in 48.12 and Malcolm Mair in 49.03. Despite a stiff breeze, Martin's wife Wendy ran a terrific personal best (51.22) to be just behind experienced roadrunner Pam Walker (50.57). Supported for much of the way by Jim Aitken (52.21), Tina Cameron (52.18) and Andrea McIntosh (53.30) also ran PBs, but were both just pipped by Judith Coul (52.10). Lisa Wood (54.06), Peter Smith (54.30), and Eileen Riddoch (55.14) each ran alone strongly into the wind, whilst Wenzell Dunnett (55.58) encouraged Ruth Keddie home in a time of 55.57. With camaraderie coming from Adeline Mitchell (61.30), Michelle Cowie (62.24), and Bill Cooke (65.43), George McIntosh (57.29), Margaret Bruce (60.23), Linda Lamont (65.43), and Debbie Cowie (65.43) all ran superb debut 10ks. Meanwhile, JS Buckie Group Leaders Nick and Elaine Brown did not let the side down, with Nick (35.44) taking the 1st Male Vet prize and Elaine (49.21) taking 3rd Female Vet.

Well done to Andrea McIntosh from Buckie who picked up the Block 1 'Top Improver' award. Along with her regular attendance, natural enthusiasm, and participation in local events, Andrea won the award for encouraging her Co-op colleagues Gemma McKenzie, Paula Boyfield and Debbie Shearer to also join JS Buckie.
